THE BEAUTY OF OSTENTATIOUS JEWELRY - PURE GOTHIC STYLE
The Gothic style
is an instrumental style implored in the vast field of art like sculpture,
fresco, panel painting, illuminated manuscripts, stained glass, etc.
Gothic art is
an artistic style that emerged in Western Europe in the late medieval period
and also in Italy. It started in Northern France and spread through the west,
taking place in various regions. It is a successor to the Romanesque style
around the late 13th century and was later succeeded by the Renaissance.
CLASSICAL AND MODERN GOTHIC
JEWELRY
The Gothic styles of jewelry have long
been in existence over the centuries until the present time to show one's rank
in the social hierarchy instead of the common misconception by people as
something that is just recently in vogue.
Round
massive, dense surface decorations characterized the classical Gothic style
of jewelry as compared to the modern style, which is made of pointed, simple,
and elegant designs in conjunction with the elaborate use of the beautiful
enamel works. The revival of the Gothic styles was in the 19th
century, and in it is a style called the Neo-Gothic.
These Gothic pieces
of jewelry usually emphasize the romance, cruelty, aggression, and savagery of
its founder. Their ranges include bracelets and Gothic
earrings adorned with swords and spikes, massive Gothic rings in the style of animal
heads and skulls, large, heavy black necklaces with crosses, and so many
others.
In the
expression of the romance, Gothic items like the vine,
roses, and heart are usually paired with other things. Though there are other Gothic style
symbols, one of the most important ones is that of the dragon, which portrays a
continuing battle between the evil and the good.
These Gothic
jewelry are often made of white metals such as platinum, gold, and silver,
probably due to favorable emphasis of the heaviness and darkness of black
stones affixed in Gothic
jewelry made by the light tint of these so-called white metals.
To add
more brightness, precious stones and crystals like the onyx gemstone,
amethysts, emeralds, sapphires, and rubies are combined to the gold and silver
pieces. And, in bringing out the Gothic jewelry's beauty, floral ornaments like the clover, maple,
oak, holly, ivy, stylized leaves, grapevines, roses, fern, buttercup, wormwood,
and others are used along with other designs.
TYPES OF GOTHIC
JEWELRY
The
belt and brooch are part of the most common types of jewelry in the early Gothic
period. The ring brooches are the most common available brooch, which is
inscribed with texts showing love or religious texts. The brooches do come with
rubies and sapphires.
Rings
decorated with engraved gems set or with just plain gold bands without
engravement are the Gothic types.
Gothic Rings are
part of the accessories that make the wedding ceremony a memorable one and can
be worn on any finger or several fingers. The signet ring is a type of ring
used to sign and seal documents.
The
Crown is one of the most popular royalty symbols and is flaunted in wedding
ceremonies. In the early Romanesque period, grander crowns called coronals,
circlet, and chaplets are mostly royalty. Still, later in the Gothic
period, they are usually worn by ladies, knights, and squires. In addition to
the romanesque Crown decoration, the Gothic crown
decoration has the characteristic pinnacles called fleurons.
Badges
and Medallions
are usually worn as
pendants and are sometimes sewn unto clothing.
STYLES OF GOTHIC
JEWELRY
There
are several styles of the
Gothic
jewelry which are often similar or in contradiction to each other.
Styles
like the Antiquity, Victorian Goth, Renaissance, and Romantic have so many things
in common and are in close resemblance with the jewelry of the middle age
period and are often designed with the hand using lace patterns as white
pearls.
One of
the popularly used Gothic lace
ornament is called Tracery. It is in very diverse forms like six-leaved
foilage, shamrocks, roses, fish bubbles, quatrefoils, rectilinear geometric
shapes, quadrangles, and spherical triangles.
These
styles are mostly exemplified by their great diversity, compliance with the
logical rules, harmony, and symbolic meaning. As mentioned above, the styles
bring into the open the romantic nature of their owner and thus the most used
styles by females as they are eye-catching, beautiful, and elegant in their
look.
The
Fetish Goth style is synthetic materials, non-precious metals, and inexpensive
precious metals like silver and, most importantly, the traditional black
necklace. Pieces usually portray these styles with fetish bias like
chains, bandages, collars, handcuffs, etc. The jewelry of this style symbolizes
specific characteristics of supernatural forces, and their main aim is to show
the association of a person to a particular cult group.
The
Vampire goth style is usually made of silver and encompasses images that
portray the characteristics of vampires like the bats and spider
earrings. This style is connected with the dark view of life, the
afterlife, and death and has a definite focus.
The
Androgyne Goth style is suitable for both sexes as they are similar to the Gothic style
jewelry and complemented with the typical Gothic
symbol. Their collections include massive pendants, large rings, collars made
of thorns and chains.
Today,
despite its ostentatious root and sophisticated design, Gothic
jewelry is fast becoming a common trend amidst designers and fashion-mongers.
Modern Gothic
jewelry can be irresistibly beautiful and can be worn by anyone who intends to,
irrespective of being a Goths or not. I
believe that in the near future, people with different personalities will be
able to choose their favorite one on the Gothic
jewelry platform. From then on, it will not be terrifying and incompatible, but
will be friendly and tensile.
